Creative Work by Latin@s at Ohio State

Latin Buckeye

by Juan Sanchez Jr.

Viva la raza
Viva la lucha

Long live the spirit
Of the Latino student
And their dreams
Many backgrounds
Many beliefs
Many reasons to be here
So it seems
A culture
A faith
A common language(s)
And everything in between
Chosen few
Know what to do
To be the hope
Of a people
That had to roam
To find work
To care for those back home
We are students
Artists
Engineers
Lawyers
Teachers
Keepers
Of the sick and the lame
Bring forth la luz
To la gente in the dark
And ease their pain
We must share our ideals
Of work and sacrifice
Of faith and family values
All in the name of Christ
We didn’t cross the border
The border crossed us
This is our country
Let us not be bussed
Back to secondary citizens
Go forth
And claim
What is rightfully yours
We are all
Brothers and sisters
Mothers and fathers
Toda una familia
It is a duty
A call to arms
The powers that be
Shall do no more harm
Rise up
And be counted
The trumpet
Shall be sounded
Show them
What can be done
When we
Come together
As one.

This piece is similar to the Su Opinión piece that I did for the magazine. The message is also very similar and can be summarized as a call to Latin@s to stand up and do what we must. While the piece is directed towards Latin@s at Ohio State, it is not exclusive to them. It is a call for action to all Latin@s attending school.
