¡Bienvenido de regreso! (Welcome back!) After a long break, we trust this edition of ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? finds you with recharged batteries and renewed energy to start a new quarter. Hopefully, as the cold weather sets in and the snow starts to accumulate, you are comfortable with the work pace of a new academic year and can start focusing on new short-term goals; internships, full-time jobs… even your next summer vacation.
Yearly, ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? produces four issues, each one with a different purpose and focus. In the summer, the magazine focuses on outreach to the external community and prospective students, while the Fall issue serves to welcome students, especially the new freshmen. In the spring, the magazine sets the tone for the end of the academic year including useful information for those graduating and/or looking for jobs. Finally, the Winter edition typically provides students with information about the resources available in different areas, and this issue is no different. In our pages you will find information that will prove relevant in the continuation of your adaptation process at Ohio State.
Economic Access dedicates some space to educate students on how to close the financial gap to stay in college. Wondering where to live next year or want to assess your readiness to move out of the dorms? Do yourself a favor and read the advice from experts in the Housing Clinic, Financial Aid and the Office of Student Life on signing leases. Discover the real cost of off-campus housing, the benefits of on-campus learning communities and tips on how to live cheaper. Also, if you need more information about resources available at Ohio State or are in need of apoyo (support), take a minute to read OMA’s Support Guide.
While we strive to provide useful and relevant information, in this particular issue we are responding to suggestions to write about what happens after graduation, when the real world starts. With the help of student organizations and their alumni networks, we are providing examples of what Latin@ alumni are doing. In this edition, we are focusing on Alpha Psi Lambda, the nation’s first and largest co-ed Latino interest fraternity promoting and advocating for Latino interests, and how some of its past members are making positive contributions to the community as professionals. The individuals we are featuring are examples of the connection Ohio State shares with the external community. They add to the many stories of successes, challenges and aspirations of members of the Latin@ community that ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? has shared with our readers throughout these years.
We want to illustrate the fact that our focus is not only to bring students to Ohio State, but also to highlight the impact of Ohio State students on the community and to show that the investment in a college education at Ohio State surely pays off. Additionally, you will find the stories of Paola Seguil and Veronica Orozco which reflect the positive impact of SROP and involvement in research on their careers. We also wanted to acknowledge the work of Dr. Gustavo Schuenemann with the Ohio State University Extension and recognize the efforts of organizations like SHPE in promoting national initiatives that align with the University’s goals.
This edition of ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? marks another milestone; it is the first issue of a new calendar year which we hope will bring new opportunities of growth, betterment and innovation. My experience through this past year and a half has been exceptional and we can only hope that you continue reading our magazine and enjoying it as much as we enjoy putting it together.
