Fiesta in the Fall 2006

On November 8, hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members attended The Fiesta in the Fall, an annual event sponsored by Hispanic Student Services. The Fiesta in the Fall was originally planned to provide support for students whose families are far away and might have started to feel homesick after several weeks at Ohio State. The lively crowd enjoyed the food (which involved making your own burritos of chicken, steak, meat or beans), the entertainment by Yumbambé, performances by Foclor Hispano and Club Tropical, and the opportunity to learn about dozens of organizations on campus.

Professor from California addresses educational issues

On November 2, Patricia Baquedano-López, an associate professor at the University of California at Berkeley, visited Ohio State with the support of the Martha King Center for Language and Literacy Studies, Latino Studies, and the College of Education and Human Ecology. Her lecture centered on language and culture in the education of Latin@ youth. She also addressed recent trends in the U.S. Latino population, the relationship between immigration and educational policy, and provided perspectives on language and literacy education.

Hispanic/Latin@ Faculty and Staff Social

The Organization of Hispanic Faculty and Staff (OHFS) periodically hosts socials for Latin@ faculty, staff, and students to get to know each other and enjoy a relaxed environment, outside of the pressures of work and school. OHFS sponsored two socials this fall, on September 22 and December 1. The socials were held at the Wexner Center, so those present also had the opportunity to enjoy the art of the Center.

Students share educational experiences at the Soluciones forum

On October 13, as a part of the Soluciones event (see page 24), four students offered testimony of their experiences in the Ohio educational system and their desire to attend college and continue learning. Pictured from left to right are Lauro Reyes-Ganto, a student at Columbus Public Schools, Adrian Diaz, a student at The Ohio State University, and Diana Narciso, a student at Southwestern City Schools. They provided their testimony to policymakers, Ohio senators and congressmen, and representatives from different educational institutions.

The Multicultural Center’s Farewell to the Ohio Union Celebration

On November 28, supporters of the Multicultural Center (of which Hispanic Student Services is a part) came together in a celebration of the Center’s work and a farewell to the Ohio Union. Vice President for Student Affairs Richard Hollingsworth and Vice Provost Mac Stewart provided greetings and insight on the importance of the Center, and offered words of excitement about the new union. The Center recognized several individuals and organizations that have provided important support for their work.
