During spring quarter, UCHO will organize and sponsor the 3rd Annual Hispanics in Higher Education Conference. Hispanics in Higher Education was started in 2007 by the executive board of UCHO to provide Latin@/Hispanic undergraduate students with the tools to successfully prepare for graduate school. This planned conference will cover various key topics such as the different graduate schools and programs around the nation that offer fellowships (a form of financial aid); how to craft a personal statement; overcoming the initial barriers that Latino/Hispanic students often encounter while attending graduate school; and how to choose the appropriate graduate school mentor and program.
The conference features our own faculty and staff members from Ohio State who have volunteered their time to cover the topics previously listed and giving their own personal view of their graduate experiences. Past participants include Dr. Ana Berrios, Career Connection; Cyndi Freeman-Fail, Recruitment and Diversity Initiatives, The Graduate School; Dr. Ernesto Escoto, Counseling & Consultation Service; Dr. Manuel Martinez, Department of English; Dr. Fredrick Aldama, Department of English; and Adrian H. Huerta, Graduate Student in Higher Education Administration.
Our first conference, held in 2007, consisted of OSU undergraduate students who had the opportunity to obtain information that would enable them to balance their educational and curricular goals while preparing for graduate school. Previously the conference was a one day event, but to accommodate the busy schedules of students and faculty, it is now a weeklong event to ensure interested individuals may attend the workshops. The conference runs during Hispanic Awareness Week, which is scheduled from April 19-26, 2009.
UCHO continues to sponsor and organize events throughout the academic year. Our mission is to enhance the collaboration of various organizations and show a more powerful and united group and presence. As the Hispanic population continues to grow in the state of Ohio, UCHO continues to support and provide resources in hopes of eliminating the excuses that one may come up with for not achieving success.
