Creative Work by Latin@s at Ohio State

By Carlos Castillo

The This spring quarter we asked the Latino community to send us samples of their creative work. Students, faculty and staff answered our request by submitting samples of sculpture, painting, poetry, photography, even theatre. ¡Muchas gracias! Below, we present the works of two Ohio State students and their own description of the pieces.

Veronica Vizcarra
An international student from Peru, Vizcarra has been studying at Ohio State for almost three years now and will graduate in Spring 2008. Currently a senior at the College of the Arts in the programs of painting and drawing, Vizcarra is equally interested in sculpture. Her future plans include getting an M.F.A. in Sculpture.

Protection
By Veronica Vizcarra
Medium: wood

“I made this piece thinking of a way to protect myself and it was intended to be an extension of my body. More than a physical shield, the piece stimulates a sense of self security and confidence. In other words, it is a representation of awareness of our own strength

For this piece I used four kinds of wood that were carefully shaped and glued. When I was done with it, it perfectly wrapped my body. It ended up having a life of its own, and also became a metaphor: it stands proud alone, but it originally needed different kinds of wood to become what it is.

Each single piece is very different, they have different shapes and angles. But they all make the piece seem as a whole. “

Lights
By Veronica Vizcarra
Medium: Plaster and wire

“This is a group of small different mini sculptures. These pieces were made with the intention of evoking spirituality and solemnity. It is a personal reminder of images of candle lights in churches or pagan ceremonies, rituals that people still practice in Peru and many countries in Latin America. I grew up knowing about these practices, but it still intrigues me and gets my imagination running. My intention is to provoke meditation and contemplation amidst an almost religious silence.”

River
By Veronica Vizcarra
Medium: Acrylic on wood

“This painting is a recollection of my father’s birthplace, where he and I would go every summer. When I look at this small painting I feel nostalgic of a time and place that is so far away. I wanted to paint it as I remember it --not perfect because memories are not like that. One chooses what to remember best and what to forget.”

Elizabeth Alvarez

A freshman at Newark Campus, majoring in Art Technology, Alvarez contributed her piece “Tropical Ink” for our cover page. Its vibrant colors and nature-still -life image perfectly align with a spring theme. In addition, Alvarez is very
interested in 3D modeling .

Medium: Watercolor and ink

“I painted it as a gift to mom for Mother’s day. I wanted to depict the flowers blooming and I intentionally added a drop of ink to create a feeling of motion.”

Mary
By Elizabeth Alvarez
Medium: Acrylic

“I made this when I was in high school as part of a class that required us to select an existing artist and try to immitate his/her style. I like this piece a lot because I was able to achieve a great level of accuracy of the brushstrokes, colors and the expression of her face.” 
