Snapshot of Activities

Taste of OSU

On Feb. 10, the ballroom at the Ohio Union was transformed into a global carnival, with the annual Taste of OSU and World Carnival.
This is an event where the international student clubs and organizations at OSU share their food and culture with the rest of the OSU community.

Flowerscapes

On the evening of Jan. 12, the opening for Tony Mendoza’s latest exhibition kicked off with a surprise.
This exhibition is a change from Mendoza’s usual work, as he now enters the digital and color world, using flowers as his new muses. Specifically, the garden flowers planted by his wife in the Grandview Community Garden.

Movimientos

On Jan. 27, Morrisson Tower hosted Movimientos, a vibrant orchestration that incorporated dancing, music, food and a prize raffle into a Latin@ atmosphere. The presentations were followed by a salsa lesson and music by DJ Ray “Ritmo.”

Edith Gonthier dances salsa with Carlos Rubio from Club Tropical. Instructor Edward Luna plays Brazilian Capoeira with a student.

María Fránquiz

On Jan. 26, Professor María Fránquiz discussed her research and perspectives on issues related to literacy, language, culture and the educational experiences of Latin@ youth and their teachers. She also described newcomers’ centers, which provide orientation to international students before they start in school.

Oi Brasil!

The new Brazilian student organization at Ohio State kicked off its activities in Winter Quarter with informal conversation sessions on Thursday evenings at Larry’s. The goal of the sessions was for people to meet each other, practice Portuguese and talk about common cultural interests.
In collaboration with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Oi Brasil! would like to increase awareness of Lusofone studies to increase enrollment in Portuguese classes offered by the department.
