Andres Reyes does research
for the
OSU Cancer Center. |
When asked about his nationality, Andres
Reyes says its hard to answer because, while hes
lived in the United States since he was five, an important
part of him is from Mexico, where he was born, and his
roots are in Colombia, his parents native country.
Reyes is currently pursuing a bachelors degree
in Molecular Genetics at OSU, and expects to graduate
in spring 2007. He is also doing laboratory research
on human cancer genetics and preparing to take the Medical
College Admission Test (MCAT) to fulfill his dream of
attending medical school after graduation.
Part of the laboratory research he does is to understand
the effects that the gene retinoblastoma (RB) has on
the development of cancer. When there is a mutation
in Human RB, this leads to the formation of an eye cancer
called retinoblastoma. In general, RB is found in all
cells and so the study of that particular gene will
allow us to learn about other types of cancer.
Both of his parents are physicians and have their own
medical practice on the East side of Columbus. Reyes
says his parents are an inspiration to him, not only
in professional but also in personal terms. One of his
biggest challenges has been to stay motivated and focused.
A lot of my classes are really hard, and I found
in my family the help and comfort I needed to stay motivated
and to ultimately achieve good grades.
Asked to give some advice to incoming students, Reyes
says that attending classes and studying are very important.

your education while you are here, and also try to have
some fun.
