Medical services are not always available
for those who need it the most. They can be a luxury from
which, in many instances, only the most fortunate can benefit.
Moreover, the economic boundary for access to medical services
is only exacerbated by an almost equally burdening language
barrier. The immigrant Latin community in Columbus is strongly
affected by these obstacles. Many of them do not posses health
insurance, and if they do, the language barrier might prevent
them from simply taking the initiative of making a phone call
to see a physician. As a result, many Hispanic immigrants
do not even receive the most basic medical care needed to
maintain good health.
In 1999, the Latino Health Initiative in conjunction with
the Ohio State University established "La Clinica Latina"
with the purpose of providing free primary care services for
Hispanics who lack health insurance, and/or have limited financial
resources, and do not speak English. The services offered
include: general medicine, dentistry, routine care for adults,
children and the elderly, pregnancy care, cancer screenings
and gynecology. They hope to have optometry services available
in the near future. In addition, education is provided in
the areas of nutrition, screening, family planning, AIDS,
parenting and medical insurance programs. Staff includes Spanish
speaking OSU faculty, post-graduate residents, medical and
dental students and other volunteers. The clinic serves about
25 patients every other Tuesday under the guidance of Dr.
Ashcraft, who is the current clinic director. The dental services
are mainly provided by a group of dental students who, through
the Hispanic Dental Association and the College of Dentistry,
have become involved and strongly committed to the clinic.
The clinic is located at 2231 N. High St., in the first floor
of the OSU Thomas E. Rardin Family Practice Center, at the
corner of Northwood and High St. It is not an emergency service
as it only provides free medical consultations. In cases where
more sophisticated testing or equipment is needed, patients
are referred to the OSU Hospital.
"La Clinica Latina" is open to volunteers who strongly
believe and would like to help in this cause. Spanish speaking
medical, dental and nursing students, as well as any Spanish
speaking volunteers are welcome to join the clinic's staff.

En muchas ocasiones los servicios
de salud son un lujo del cual únicamente los más
afortunados pueden beneficiarse. Las dificultades económicas,
directamente relacionadas a la falta de servicios de salud,
se vuelven mayores cuando se toman en cuenta diferencias sociales,
culturales y lingüísticas. Desafortunadamente,
la comunidad hispana inmigrante en Columbus sufre las consecuencias
de estos obstáculos. Muchos inmigrantes no poseen seguro
médico, y si lo tienen, en muchas ocasiones se abstienen
de hacer una cita médica debido a las dificultades
del lenguaje. Como consecuencia, muchos inmigrantes hispanos
ni siquiera reciben los servicios primarios de salud necesarios
para mantener una vida saludable.
In 1999, la Iniciativa de Salud para Latinos
(Latino Health Initiative) junto con La Universidad del Estado
de Ohio (The Ohio State University) fundaron la "Clínica
Latina" con el propósito de proveer servicios
de salud básicos gratuitos a personas de origen hispano
sin seguro médico, de bajos recursos económicos,
y/o que no hablen Inglés. Los servicios primarios ofrecidos
incluyen medicina general, odontología, cuidado básico
para adultos, niños y ancianos, examenes preventivos
para el cáncer y ginecología. Muy pronto se
establecerán servicios de optometría. Además,
se provee educación en las areas de nutrición,
medicina preventiva, planificación familiar, V.I.H.,
y programas de seguro médico. El personal de la clínica
es completamente bilingüe y consiste de profesores de
OSU, residentes de la escuela de medicina, estudiantes de
medicina y odontología, y otros voluntarios. La clínica
atiende aproximadamente 25 pacientes dos veces al mes (cada
otro martes) bajo la supervisión de Dr. Ashcrat, quien
es el director de la misma. Los servicios dentales son mayormente
proveidos por estudiantes quienes a traves de la Asociación
Hispana Dental (Hispanic Dental Association) y la La Escuela
de Odontologia (College of Dentistry) se han compremetido
a esta causa.
La clínica se encuentra en 2231 N. High
St., en el primer piso del Centro de Medicina Familiar (Family
Pratice Center) Thomas E. Rardin de la universidad (OSU).
El edificio está localizado entre las calles Northwood
y High. La clínica no ofrece servicios médicos
de emergencia, ya que unicamente provee consultas generales.
En caso de que examenes o equipo más sofisticado sea
necesario, los pacientes son referidos al hospital de la universidad.

esta causa y les deseen contribuir. Estudiantes hispano hablantes
de medicina, odontologia, y enfermeria, asi como todo voluntario
hispano hablante son bienvenidos a unirse al personal de la
