Choose Your Battles Wisely

As a native of Southern California, I was exposed to the many different aspects of my Latino heritage. Everyday, I was submerged in the splendor of the culture into which I was happily born. Everyday, I learned something new about what made me who I am, and everyday, I fell in love with this reality. I now find myself in Columbus, Ohio. When I first moved here from Los Angeles this past winter, I ran across an issue of ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? with a list of restaurants and markets that sell Latin American food.

There must have been twenty places, all with addresses and phone numbers provided. As I looked at the list, I was surprised to see that so many businesses were dedicated to catering to mexicanos, boriquas, dominicanos, venezolanos, cubanos, and all other Latino/Hispanic nationalities represented in and around Columbus. But where could I find some good tortillas, or the best frijoles negros, or truly authentic platanos fritos? That was when I decided to write a column in ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? informing Latinos/Hispanics at OSU about the best places to enjoy great Latino food. In addition to those Latinos/Hispanics already living in Columbus, it is also my intention to assist those that are thinking about coming to OSU for their college education; knowing where to find good food like mom’s would make time spent at OSU more comfortable.

And so the food and market review column of ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? was born! Since its inception, I have put together a team of four other students, Erica Lerma, Melinda Silva, Ramon Suarez, and Nicole DeGreg, who will be assisting me in my quest to find food like mom makes. Together, we will be visiting area restaurants and markets, sampling what they offer, and providing you, the ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? reader, with our opinions of how each measures up. In this column you will be able to pick which places you want to patronize. You will know where to go to celebrate a special occasion. Take-out restaurants will also be featured to accommodate the busy schedules of students. Need someone to cater a party or club function? The food and market review column will point out which places are “organization-friendly.” And if you think you can prepare a dish better than any ol’ restaurant, then the food and market review column will also give you ideas about where to find the essential ingredients for a Latino meal. As most students are on tight budgets, price ranges will be provided with every review. All of these qualities will be taken into account on a rating system especially designed for Latinos: 5 chiles for the best places, 1 chile for those in need of some improvement!

Our team aims to provide the best information on the participating establishments so you, the reader, can make the choice of where to spend your time and money. By no means are our opinions the final word on what is good food or what places to avoid, but hopefully we will be able to provide you with some useful information. And we extend to you the opportunity to assist us in our quest…go out. Find new places. Tell us about them. We will be sure to pass on your insights so that we can make the best out of what Columbus has to offer a Nuestra Comunidad•
