I have long thought that autumn is the happiest time of the year, partly because of the nice weather and the color of the changing leaves, but more importantly because it is when the academic year begins once again, bringing with it all sorts of hopes and opportunities and new beginnings. In this context, I am extremely happy to welcome you, or welcome you back, to the Ohio State University. We hope that you are finding this to be a warm and supportive environment, and that you will experience the coming year as the most exciting and most productive yet in your academic progress. Each of you is a talented student, chosen to be here because of the contributions that we are sure you will make to the university community. And we are equally confident that you also take away a great deal: a wonderful education, a group of lifelong friends, and preparation for a lifetime of competence and productivity in your chosen profession. Take full advantage of all the opportunities the University and Columbus offer to you, both in the classroom and outside it, on the campus and in the larger community. And have a wonderful year!
