Former First Year Students Update
By Thania Gaido

Past first year students would like to share how their college experience has been like since they were a freshman here at OSU, they also give some advice to incoming students.

Phillip Moncayo

Advice to incoming freshmen:
“The best way to make the most out of your first year is to get involved! You’ll make great friends and almost every organization provides free food at their meetings”

I feel as if Ohio State has met my expectations. OSU offers plenty of resources to succeed, and the majority of the professors are more than willing to help out students with their academics.

I hold officer positions for the Ohio State Equestrian Team, Physical Facilities’ Student Council for Improving Campus, The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and I’m an active member on the Concrete Canoe Team and plan on continuing my tutoring experience with VIVA, which is an organization that provides role models for the Hispanic children of migrant workers at public schools.”

Brittany Gerena

Advice to incoming freshmen:
“Find an honest balance between studying and going out. And definitely take advantage of the FREE tutoring. It really does help and in a lot of cases it helped me get a better grade”

Coming from a small town I would say Ohio State has definitely met the expectation of a larger city environment. I am also really happy because I’ve made a lot of new friends here.

Managing time for me wasn’t as hard as I had thought it would be. Since I could schedule my classes the way I wanted, you just have to find a schedule that works for you and stick to it. I wish I had made more time to get involved on campus activities, like join clubs and organizations. I did work at the front desk of my dorm. I got to know a lot of people that lived in my dorm, and getting to know your Hall Directors is a great idea.

Gerardo Davis

Advice to incoming freshmen:
“Keep your mind open, your attitude positive, and stay focused on your goals”

One thing I was told was that I would enjoy Ohio State, and at the end of this first year I can honestly say that it was awesome. I tried to let my freshman year be a year where I would observe all the different organizations on campus so that in my sophomore year I could decide which ones I really wanted to join.

Putting together a schedule of where I need to be and what I should be doing has helped tremendously in organizing all the things I need to be doing academically and with extracurricular activities.

Lia Lissette Letellier Luna

Advice to incoming freshmen:
“Study as much as you can, don’t wait for the last minute. Don’t slack off in your schoolwork, you are learning to be independent. Enjoy your first year at Ohio State!”

I have met most of my expectations here at OSU, except the getting the excellent grades. Even though I try hard, sometimes it can be hard to reach that precious A. Since I had to take a lot of GEC’s, I didn’t put as much effort as I should have done. Now, that I have a new method of studying, it gets easier.

I am involved in the International Affairs Scholars group where I get to learn more about the cultures around the world: Phi Upsilon Omicron, an honor society from the college of Human Ecology. I am also planning to join the Fashion Guild, where the name says it all. I’m a Fashion Design major and this organization deals with fashion.
