Just Me and My Roommate!
By Jamilaishia Nicholson, University Housing

The Office of University Housing wants you to enjoy the year in your residence hall, and we realize that part of your success is based upon a satisfying roommate relationship. The following are a few helpful strategies to keep in mind as the year unfolds:

Identify the things that are important to you in your living situation.
Prior to having a conversation with your new roommate, be sure that you have given thought to what will make you happy and satisfied with your new living arrangement.

Be thoughtful and serious regarding your Roommate Agreement.
In October, this agreement is intended to assist students in having a conversation about values, styles and choices that may influence the roommate relationship.

Say what needs to be said to your roommate.
The key to any successful conversation and living arrangement is honesty. Simply bringing an issue to your roommate’s attention can prevent any future mishaps. The longer you wait to discuss the situation, the longer it will take for a resolution to occur.

University Housing is committed to educating students and providing the highest quality housing, programs, and services that prepare students to be productive members of a diverse society. Many students report an enhanced learning experience at the university, especially when respect and the willingness to communicate are present in their living situation.

Should you have additional questions, please remember that residence hall staff members are available to assist you. For more information about University Housing and roommates, please visit our website at www.housing.osu.edu.
