The Latin@ Studies Committee and the Office of Hispanic Student Services are co-organizing a symposium in which representatives of Latin@ Studies programs, junior and senior scholars as well as directors of Latin@ research centers will discuss the importance of Latin@ Studies in the Midwest. This event will take place on April 16-17, 2004 at the Blackwell facility in the Fisher School of Business and the Multicultural Center at OSU. On the first day of activities, four panels are scheduled on the following topics: “Latin@ Cultural Studies”; “Historicizing Latin@ Studies”; “New Directions in Latin@ Studies”; and “Report from the Field.” These panels feature some of the most intellectually exciting scholars in the field. The first two panels are presented by junior scholars, and the other two by senior scholars, including one by directors of programs, who will address the challenges and promises of developing Latin@ Studies programs in the region. The second day of activities presents a summit of representatives of programs and Latin@ faculty in general with the purpose of laying the groundwork for inter-institutional collaborations in the Midwest.

Due to its regional and interdisciplinary scope, and its two-fold academic and organizational focus, this will be the first time that a conference of its kind will take place at OSU or elsewhere. The list of presenters who have already confirmed their participation include Frances Aparicio, U. of Illinois at Chicago; Suzanne Oboler, U. of Illinois at Chicago; Ruth Behar, U. of Michigan; Jorge Chapa, Indiana U.; María Montoya, U. of Michigan; Theresa Delgadillo, Notre Dame U.; Mary Beltran, U. of Wisconsin; Ramona Fernandez, MSU; María Cotera, U. of Michigan; Pablo Mitchell, Oberlin College; Adrian Burgos, U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. OSU Professors Luz Calvo (Comparative Studies), Catriona R. Esquibel (Women’s Studies), Ileana Rodríguez (Spanish and Portuguese), Keith Kilty (Social Work), and Ignacio Corona (Spanish and Portuguese) will be the moderators. Professor Angeles Romero (Comparative Studies) will be in charge of the cultural program.

The complete program of activities will appear in our Winter issue. For further information, please contact Professor Ignacio Corona at 292-8617 or the Latino/a Studies at OSU webpage: www.comparativestudies.ohiostate.edu/latinostudies/events.htm
