For the last ten years, ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? has served the Latino community at Ohio State spreading news and information. Because of the recent fast growth of the Latino community, the responsibilities of our magazine have expanded. The need to keep you updated about the current issues at Ohio State and the surrounding community has increased. We inaugurate this new academic year with two editors. Francie Buschur not only designs, and lays out the magazine; but also develops and maintains our web page. Michelle F. Ramos-Pellicia works with the magazine’s content and co-edition.

We have established fixed sections in our magazine. You can refer to these permanent sections when you want to read information on academics, student sources and resources. Every issue will have a special feature where we will discuss issues such as Affirmative Action, Latin@ Studies at OSU, among other topics.

As you read through our pages, you will find that we are making use of the “@” in a new way (instead of “o/a”). We are using this symbol because we want all Latin@s, men and women, to feel included.

Because we know how important it is for the community the Supreme Court ruling on minority’s college admissions and its effect on Affirmative Action, we have worked on a special feature of this issue of ¿Qué Pasa? where we address the Supreme Court decision on the Michigan case and its impact on the admission process at Ohio State.

Raquel Raíces educates us about problems Latin@s face as an ethnic group. We also have articles discussing the accomplishments of Prof. Rojas. Prof. Corona will inform us about the Latin@ Studies Symposium. We introduce Ernesto Escoto who recently started working with Counseling and Consultation Services.

Students who get involved at the university have more chances of staying in school and finishing it. There are many ways in which you can get involved. For instance, you can become a member in one of the many Latino organizations on campus, or, participate in the Summer Research Program (SROP).

The 2003 freshmen class has many expectations and is already getting involved. We also have graduate students conducting research like Reyna Martínez and Mariela Oyola. Our Alumnni are also very active in the community.

We want to hear your opinion on articles in our magazine. You can visit us in our office, send us e-mail or snail mail. Your feedback is crucial in maintaining the high quality of this magazine and in addressing issues that are of interest to you.

We hope you enjoy reading all the contents of this issue of ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? as much as we enjoyed preparing them. Once again, welcome to the home of the Buckeyes!!! We hope you enjoy your academic experience at Ohio State, and that your academic growth is enriched with many academic and cultural experiences. Remember, these could be the best years in your life, make the most out of them and…

GO BUCKS!!!

While we here at ¿Qué Pasa, OSU? try to always give credit where it is due, we regret to say that in the Summer issue, there was an omission. With our apologies, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Juan Miranda, who contributed the photographs on pages 6 and 7 of our summer edition.
